Many people think a little speeding is okay

According to a recent survey, many drivers in Louisiana feel like going a little bit over the speed limit is okay.

Of the 1,000 drivers surveyed by an organization that compiles premium quotes from car insurance companies, the vast majority, 82%, said that they traveled over the speed limit from time to time by up to 15 miles per hour.

Far fewer, only 15%, said that they traveled between 16 miles per hour and 29 miles per hour over the limit, while 3% said that they drove more than 30 miles per hour over the speed limit.

When it came to why people were speeding, over one-third, that is 36%, indicated that they were running late for an event and needed to arrive somewhere on time. Additionally, 27%, over 1 in 4, said that they traveled over the speed limit because other drivers do it too. Over 15% opined that speeding was not unsafe as long as one did so in moderation, staying under 20 miles per hour over the speed limit.

On a related point, 38% of those surveyed said that they were in the habit of speeding, but they only go only a little over the speed limit, between 5 and 10 miles per hour.

The survey also suggested that people use the road conditions and the weather as excuses for speeding. About 71% of motorists said that they did not see anything wrong with speeding on the freeway, but just over 10% said that they were okay with whizzing down neighborhood streets.

Likewise, those surveyed seemed to discount the danger of speeding in fair weather conditions, but they acknowledged that exceeding the posted limit was a bad idea in rainy or wintry weather.

The truth of the matter though is any speeding is always potentially dangerous. A Houma resident who gets hurt in a car accident involving a speeding driver, including one who was just traveling too fast for the conditions, may be able to hold the responsible party accountable through legal action.
